Why There Are Different Time Zones...

Over one hundred years ago, each of the World's cities had it's own local time, which was when the sun was at its highest in the sky and that was considered noon.

Because of this each city had a different time i.e. in New York it would be 6:00PM, in Boston it would be 6:12PM (as Boston is about 3 degrees east of New York City).

This small difference in time differences per city did not matter, and the system worked perfectly well. Until that was, up to when the railroads were built and became very popular.

This inspired Canadian railway planner and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming to create differing time zones back in the late 1870s. The time zones mean the railroad networks could be standardized and so they were used for the first time in 1883.

In 1884, in Washington, D.C at an International conference World time zones were allocated. The whole World was divided into 24 time zones, as there are 24 hours in a day, each one a long strip from North Pole to South Pole, about 15 degrees of longitude wide and about one hour difference in time.

By dividing the earth into 24 time zones meant that everybody was using a time setting very close to their local time. Because each time zone differed by a whole number, it was easy to convert from the time in one zone to the time in another, and therefore easier to make travel plans.

This time zone system is still in use today all over the World, with only a few places setting their closet 15 or 30 minutes different from the time according to the standardized time zone system
